How to use Gmail’s Google Tasks as your daily to-do list

Dedicated to-do apps abound, but one of the best may be right in your inbox. Google Tasks, integrated into Gmail, provides a simple way to create ordered task lists, complete with due dates, and even turn emails into action items. Here’s how to get started.

Create a task

With Google Tasks you can create a to-do list right in your inbox.

To start building a to-do list, click the down arrow next to “Gmail” in the upper left corner of your inbox. The Tasks window will open in the lower-right corner. To add a task, click the plus icon at the bottom of the window. A blank field will open with a checkbox and a blinking cursor. Type in your action item.

If you want to add a due date or notes, click the arrow to the right of the task and enter the details in the appropriate fields.

You can type to-dos directly in your task list or add emails as action items.

You probably find that a good chunk of the emails you receive require some action from you. Google Tasks allows you to quickly turn these messages into to-do items without leaving your inbox.

To turn an email into a task, select the message either by selecting the checkbox next to it or opening it. Next, click the More button above your inbox and select Add to Tasks from the drop-down menu. The message is added to your to-do list using the subject line as the item name. A link to the original message is also included. As when you create a task, you can add a due date and other details by clicking the arrow next to the task.

Add sub-tasks

For more complex to-dos, you’ll want to break the main task into several sub-tasks. To do this, create each sub-task under the main task and hit the Tab button to indent each one.

You can add a due date and notes to any task by clicking the arrow next to it.

In addition to your daily task list, you may want to create separate lists dedicated to specific projects. To do this, click the Switch List icon (it looks like three bullets, each followed by a line) at the bottom of your main task list and select New list from the pop-up menu. Enter the name of your new list, then click OK and add your tasks. When you want to switch between lists, just click the Switch List icon and choose the one you want.

To print or email a task list click the Actions button and select the appropriate option. From here you can also rearrange your tasks either by sorting them by due date or manually moving them up and down using the displayed key combos.

Google search now has card-based suggestions for all the best recipes

It seems Google search is getting smarter and smarter; it certainly is getting more convenient for mobile devices. Ever since Google introduced its card-based UI, things look more organized and are easier to spot. And the search giant is bringing a slew of recipes in that format. Now when you search on the Google app for a particular recipe, “you’ll see a carousel of tappable suggestions to make sure you catch the best recipe.”

For instance, if you type in “Chicken wing recipes,” not only will Google gather various recipes from the web with scrumptious pictures, it will also give you suggestions for more specific types such as “Buffalo,” “Honey,” “Spicy,” or “Slow cooker.” If you tap on one of those keywords, Google will show you a list of cards, each from a different website, along with a preview of ingredients, reviews, calories, and how long it’d take to cook. Pretty neat, eh?

Google Play Services battery drain: how to spot it

The reason why Google Play Services could be the culprit is because for many apps it’s the key to the world of Google: it delivers your Gmail to mail apps, maps and location settings to mapping apps, ads to ad-based apps and so on.

If your trusty phone is suddenly suffering from terrible battery life, the culprit could be Google Play Services. Batteries do deteriorate over time, but it’s a gradual process: unless you’re spectacularly unlucky, a battery that was OK yesterday won’t suddenly discharge three times faster tomorrow.

The easy way to tell whether Google Play Services is draining the battery of your device is to pop into the Battery section of your Settings app. As you can see below on the left screenshot, just tap on Battery usage.

This shows you the biggest power hogs, and in most cases you should see the Screen listed at number one, which makes sense, given that it’s the most power-hungry part of your device. If Google Play Services is using more power than the display or more power than the Android System itself, something’s wrong. In the below screenshot on the right, you can see the list of power hogs.

There are a number of reasons why Google Play Services might be using more power than you’d like. We’ve seen reports of Google Play Services eating battery life across versions 4.1.32 and 4.2, on devices running Cyanogenmod, on Lollipop and on KitKat. With so much variety there clearly isn’t a single solution to solve every problem on every device. But there are some things you can check.

As with any problem, we’re assuming you’ve already tried rebooting and that you have the most up-to-date software and firmware for your phone. If you haven’t, do those things first. They solve all kinds of issues.

  • Is Google Play Services eating battery because you have loads of accounts?

Play Services’ main job is to download things in the background. Those things could be your emails or the app’s ads, or notifications or checking your location to see if it needs to trigger a Google Now event. If your device is connected to multiple Google Accounts, for example because you have personal and work accounts or because you’re a spy or superhero with multiple identities, then Google Play Services is having to do all that for multiple accounts.

  • Is a third party app misusing Google Play Services?

If the battery drain is a recent development the problem might not be with Google Play Services but with one of the apps that uses it. Try booting into Safe Mode; if your battery problem goes away that’s a pretty big hint that the Google Play Services battery problem is down to a third party app.

  • Is Google encountering Sync errors?

Sync errors are when Google tries to synchronise data but can’t, for example because it can’t connect to a particular server. Problems with your data can also cause sync errors, so for example if something’s gone wrong with your contacts, calendar or Gmail that can cause Google to keep trying (and failing) to synchronise your local data with Google’s servers. Removing and re-adding accounts can solve persistent sync errors but before you do that, try disabling Mobile Data in Settings for a minute and then turning it back on again.

  • Is it your GPS?

When an app needs your location, it requests it through Google Play Services, which gets the information by using your GPS hardware. If you weren’t aware, using GPS takes up a lot of battery, and since Google Play Services facilitates this process, it can appear to be taking up the battery life when the GPS is really the culprit.

In the Battery usage screen we showed you how to get to before, tap on Google Play Services. On the detailed screen it shows you, scroll down until you see Location and tap it (like in the left screenshot below). You’ll then find three mode options, one of which is called Power saving. This mode doesn’t use GPS to retrieve your location, and is less accurate, but can save your battery life by only using your network and Wi-Fi information. If you find this setting to be too imprecise, simply switch it back to High accuracy later.

Third party speakers may help Google Home take on Amazon Echo

As we gear up to Google’s launch event in San Francisco next week, eyes are not only on the company’s new line-up of Pixel phones, but also on the extended range of smart home accessories expected to be on display. Google Home, a WiFi-connected smart speaker, could turn out to be one of the more important announcements made at the event, as Google prepared to ramp up its efforts in the smart home space and prepares to take on the increasingly popular Amazon Echo.

HiFi audio sales have been rejuvenated by the introduction of wireless Bluetooth and WiFi systems, and the early success of Amazon’s Echo suggests that there’s a growing consumer appetite for tying these systems in with virtual assistant and smart home products. Amazon has reportedly already sold 3 million Echo speaker systems this year, and is aiming to ship 10 million units in 2017. Google clearly does not want to be left behind, and already has an extensive ecosystem of virtual assistant based technologies, including search and app integration, that Google Home will be able to make use of.

According to a report by Variety, Google has been in talks with manufacturers to begin building other devices that will work just like Google Home. Apparently, details were discussed at a closed-door talk with some 50 participant from the home audio market. This suggests that we may end up seeing smart speakers from a variety of manufacturers, all powered by the Google Home could-based assistant.

 

Iportantly, another source alleges that Google may not allow these companies to combine their hardware with other virtual assistance, not that this demand is particularly uprising. Although manufacturers may be reluctant to put all their eggs into Google’s technology. However, some of the companies involved are said to have already worked with Google to produce speakers powered by Google Cast, a list which includes major brands such as Sony, Philips, LG, JBL, and Bang & Olufsen. However, Google has declined to comment on whether it will be working with any third-party manufacturers on this.

Google Home was originally announced back at I/O 2016, so we already know quite a bit about it. The little hub integrates a built-in Bluetooth speaker and microphone, which is paired up with Google Assistant to answer questions and respond to commands. The system is also integrated with Cast, so consumers can launch audio from compatible devices and apps, including Spotify, Tunein, Pandora, and more. Cast capabilities also mean that customers will be table to launch YouTube videos and other steaming services on their TV just by issuing a command to Google Home.

Essentially, Google Home is the company’s big play to bring its mobile assistant services to the home. Google’s portfolio of smart products may also assist the company in catching up with and leapfrogging Amazon Echo. Nest technologies have been incorporated to work on the project, opening up the possibility that other products around the home could be controlled from your speaker system.

According to an insider at the meeting, companies may be ready to unveil speakers with built-in Google Assistant integration as early as next summer. 2017 could be the year that smart homes really hit the mainstream.

Google removing support for Chrome Apps in Mac browser by 2018

The company has declared that starting in late 2016, newly-published Chrome apps will only be available to users on Chrome OS. Existing Chrome apps will remain accessible on all platforms, and developers can continue to update them.

However, by the end of 2017, the Chrome Web Store will no longer show Chrome apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux. By early 2018, people on these platforms will no longer be able to load the apps at all.

All types of Chrome apps will remain supported and maintained on Chrome OS for the foreseeable future. Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices.

Google claims that only one percent of Mac and Linux users actively utilize Chrome packaged apps. Developers are encouraged to migrate the apps to the Web, and invited to participate in a process to select APIs for migration.

Google Outlines the Amazing Opportunities of Data in New Report

As we get caught up in the daily excitement of the latest trends, functionalities and changes in social media and digital marketing, it can be easy to overlook the wider, more significant advances being made possible by increased global connectivity and the pervasiveness of online data. Facebook recently released a report on social media and its impact on cultural trends which outlined how the advent of social media has provided more access to information, which, in turn, has lead to greater understanding and progress on many issues.

TIGER CONSERVATION

The first example Google presents highlights how scientists at the University of Minnesota are using the Google Earth engine – “a multi-petabyte catalog of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with planetary-scale analysis capabilities” – in their efforts to help restore tiger habitats in key regions.

“They found that forest loss was much lower than anticipated across all tiger landscapes (roughly 8 million hectares, or less than 8 percent of the total habitat). Thanks to preservation of habitat in countries like Nepal and India, tiger populations in those countries have already increased 61 and 31 percent, respectively.”

One of the most amazing elements of this research is that it’s largely been conducted using satellite imaging information which is freely available via Google’s Earth Engine (though it does come with some use restrictions). For example, right now you can go to the Earth Engine website, enter in the global location of your choice, and you can watch how that area has evolved over time via landsat satellite imagery.

It’s fascinating to consider the ways in which such data insights can be used, particularly when looking at the example provided, in regards to mapping de-forestation and the impact that can have on native wildlife – and how such impacts can be negated in future.

SOLAR POWER

Another interesting Google research project is Project Sunroof, a solar calculator that estimates the impact and potential savings of installing solar on the roof of your home”. Through the use of Google Earth imagery, overlaid with annual sun exposure and weather patterns, Project Sunroof aims to “assess viable roof space for solar panel installation, estimate the value of solar and savings based on local energy costs, and connect you with providers of solar panels in your area”.

Project Sunroof is now available in 42 U.S. states, with data available for more than 43 million rooftops, providing an indicator of the possible savings and benefits that could be gleaned from wider adoption of solar energy – customized to your own house and/or region.

MANAGING AIR POLLUTION

And the third example highlighted by Google is a project being spearheaded by Google Earth Outreach and the Environmental Defense Fund which looks at ways to map methane gas leaks from natural gas pipelines beneath our streets.

As detailed in the video, Google’s able to do this by fitting Google Streetview cars, which are constantly traveling around and mapping our roads, with methane gas analyzers. This means that as the cars drive around capturing image content for Google Maps, they’re also measuring methane concentration every half-second as the car moves. With that data, the research team is then able to map both where and how big methane leaks are.

“What we found ranges from an average of one leak per mile (in Boston) to one leak every 200 miles (in Indianapolis), demonstrating the effectiveness of techniques like using plastic piping instead of steel for pipeline construction. We hope utilities can use this data to prioritize the replacement of gas mains and service lines (like New Jersey’s PSE&G announced last fall). We’re also partnering with Aclima to measure many more pollutants with Street View cars in California communities through this year.”

Projects like these underline the expanded possibilities of technology and connectivity, which is providing new ways to live and work smarter through increased tracking of an ever-expanding range of measures. And this is the big thing with data – with 90% of the world’s data only being created within the last few years, we’ve not had the chance to fully explore what all this insight means, there’s simply too much to take in all at once, too much to factor into your decision making to effectively utilize all these new inputs. But we are learning, and one the key things we’re coming to realize is that the core of effective big data use lies in breaking it down into small data – working within the wider dataset to pinpoint the insights and information of relevance to you and your needs, rather than being overwhelmed by everything.

When you consider these insights in the scope of the other data sources available – Twitter data’s being used to map earthquakes and flood damage, Facebook insights are being used to glean better understandings about who we are and what we’re interested in. When you match up all the various data points, the potential for insight is amazing – the opportunities available to all people to track and measure important trends and behaviors relevant to you, your business, your community – the capacity of such analysis is virtually endless. It all comes down to how you target your research, how capable you are in narrowing down the data respective to your needs. Because it’s all there, you just need to know what you’re looking for.

And once you know that, the data opportunities from our hyper-connected world are beyond anything you can imagine.

The new software began rolling out at the online Google Play shop, and a version tailored for iPhones and iPads will soon be available at the Apple App Store, according to Google Maps director Daniel Graf.

“The new Google Maps for mobile builds on the design we released for iPhone last December and improves on it with a few useful search and navigation features,” Graf said in a blog post.

“It’s a new mapping experience that makes exploring the world and getting to the places that matter to you a lot faster and easier.”

A Latitude feature that let people automatically share their locations with friends using GPS capabilities in smartphones will be “retired” by August 9 along with the ability to “check-in” at spots being visited, according to Graf.

“We understand some of you still want to see your friends and family on a map, which is why we’ve added location sharing and check-ins to Google+ for Android,” Graf said, noting that it would soon be added to gadgets powered by Apple’s mobile operating system.

Google+ is the California-based Internet titan’s online social network, which it has been gradually weaving into its array of online services.

Enhancements to the new version of Google Maps include being able to see reports of trouble on selected routes and being automatically offered better ways to get to selected destinations.

Google also customized a version of Maps specifically for tablets.

“As more of us use mobile phones and tablets in our daily lives, information that’s useful to you isn’t just about what you need, but also where you might find it,” Graf said.

Google is tops in online maps and navigation, but Apple has been refining its own mapping software for iPhones and iPads, and Facebook is keen to follow members increasingly accessing the social network from mobile devices.

Google on Tuesday updated its free map service to guide users of Android-powered smartphones to destinations without relying on Internet connections.

An offline navigation feature previewed at a Google developers conference early this year began rolling out in an updated version of Google Maps application tailored for Android-powered mobile devices.

A version crafted for Apple smartphones or tablets is coming soon, according to Google product manager Amanda Bishop.

“Google Maps is taking steps to help people across the globe find directions and get where they’re going, even when they don’t have an Internet connection,” Bishop said in a blog post.

“Now you can download an area of the world to your phone, and the next time you find there’s no connectivity – whether it’s a country road or an underground parking garage – Google Maps will continue to work seamlessly.”

Earlier versions of the application let people download digital maps for viewing offline but did not provide turn-by-turn directions; allow searches for precise locations, or display information such as the hours businesses are open.

The new version of the application builds capabilities once limited to online maps into maps downloaded to smartphones while visiting Wi-Fi hotspots to avoid telecommunication service data charges.

Approximately 60 percent of the world still lacks Internet coverage, making it unrealistic to use online smartphone mapping services for finding one’s way, according to Bishop.

Google rolling out Material Design web-wide

Since 2014, Google has been redesigning its apps and services according to its ownMaterial Design principles. Yesterday it announced on its design blog that an upcoming release of its Chrome browser (version 49.2) will adopt Material Design as its default rendering.

Critically the new version of Chrome—dubbed Chrome MD—will override site-defined CSS in deference to the Material Design specification; colors, type, and even images will be rendered according to Google’s design language.

A pillar of the tech giant’s design strategy for almost two years, the leap to Material Design has proved successful for Google across its apps, and according to Google, imposing the design system on content displayed in its browsers will ensure a consistent and high-quality user experience for its customers:

In addition to rebranding the web in its own image, the primary impact of this update will be a radically faster web.

Speed

Google’s primary concern is for a faster web, and by limiting the variables its browser is forced to render, it expects to increase the initial render of pages by an average of 17%.

Chrome MD renders web pages faster than plain HTML with no CSS. This is because even when no styles are defined, browsers still need to poll for possible style definitions; Chrome MD simply skips this step rendering according to its internal style system.

Chrome MD marks a major adoption of AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages), significantly reducing the browser’s workload. However the majority of performance gains have been found by restricting style options.

Color

Material Design’s color palette is restricted to 256 colors, and Chrome MD will not render any color other than those 256 hex values.

Where designers specify a hex value other than one of the 256 approved colors, Chrome MD will automatically translate it to its closest Material Design equivalent. For example, these two different reds will render as the same Material Design color:

The same principle applies to RGB values, RGBA values will be translated to the closest Material Design color based on the color they overlay.

Gradients will not render at all in Chrome MD. However, the closed-beta implementation (that gradients render as their average tonal value) is expected to be adapted to render the lightest tint found in the gradient.

Images

The same color restrictions also apply to images: every pixel in a bitmap image will be rendered as one of Material Design’s 256 defined colors—much like current .gif technology. SVG color values will also be automatically converted.

Google has provided an exception to the image rule for cases it describes as “color-critical”, by piggy-backing the -webkit-appearance setting:

However this workaround will only function with bitmaps and embedded SVG files, inline SVG will always render using Material Design colors.

Typography

Replacing default system fonts, all text in Chrome MD will render using a single embedded font-family. Due to language support it will not be Roboto as might be expected, but Noto.

Text will also render in 1 of 2 tones: black, or white; the tone will be automatically selected based on the background color. Gradations of tone will be determined automatically: on dark backgrounds H1–H6 will render at 100% opacity, all other text at 70% opacity; on light backgrounds H1–H6 will render at 87% opacity, all other text will render at 54% opacity.

Chrome MD will also enforce a rigid typographic scale for weights, sizes, and line height:

These styles will not be over-ridable, and notably, there is no italic option.

Floating action buttons

Perhaps the most radical decision is the mandatory inclusion of a single, call to action. This is defined with the id primary and will be rendered as a floating action button:

If a primary call to action is omitted, Chrome MD will render its own floating action button that links to Google search results for whatever term Googlebot determines is the primary keyword(s) for the page in question.

Breakpoints

Another key area for rendering performance is pre-defined breakpoints. Based on the sizing set in Google’s new Resizer app, the usable breakpoints are: 360px, 480px, 600px, 720px, 840px, 960px, 1024px, 1280px, 1440px, 1600px.

Any designer-defined breakpoint that does not fit will be rounded to the next highest breakpoint. For example:

Wide-ranging impact

Google has a long and proud history of imposing its will on web designers, from unannounced updates to its algorithm, to the adoption of AMP. However, imposing Material Design on the web is likely to have the greatest impact.

Of course, these changes only affect websites viewed in Chrome, however with more than 52% of global browser usage, it’s difficult to imagine a site that won’t be affected.

Ostensibly Chrome’s MD update is about delivering a faster more consistent web experience, but in reality is likely to rebrand the entire web as a Google project.

The current version of Chrome is 49.0.2623.110, suggesting at least one minor update can be expected before Chrome MD rolls out in full force. However does today, April 1st, mark the point at which we finally embraced the homogeneous web?

Google has removed an April Fool’s Gmail button, which sent a comical animation to recipients, after reports of people getting into trouble at work.

The button appeared beside Gmail’s normal send button and allowed users to shut down an email thread by sending a gif of a Minion dropping a microphone.

However, a flurry of complaints about the button appeared on Google’s forums.

The firm has since withdrawn the feature and apologised.

“It looks like we pranked ourselves this year,” Google said in a statement.

“Due to a bug, the MicDrop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry.”

A mic drop is a popular meme in which someone makes a conclusive statement or rebuttal before dropping a microphone and walking off.

Google was not immediately able to clarify details of the bug.

Google added that users who were still able to see the feature could switch it off by reloading or restarting Gmail.

The button was not enabled on the Gmail accounts of enterprise business customers.

‘Lost job’

“Thanks to MicDrop I just lost my job,” claimed one user on Google’s product forums.

“I am a writer and had a deadline to meet. I sent my articles to my boss and never heard back from her. I inadvertently sent the email using the MicDrop send button.”

Another complained that they had been having interviews for a job with a company for three months and then accidentally sent a mic drop email to the HR department.

And a third said that they had sent an “important email to 30 recipients”.

Users had been informed of the button and what it would do via a message in Gmail when it first appeared.

Furthermore, users with the “undo send” capability enabled would have been able to retract a message within a certain time period after sending it.

Google also unveiled a couple of April Fool’s joke videos, including one about a new parachute delivery service and an “actual reality” headset.

Google originally announced the creation of Gmail on 1 April 2004 and, at the time, there was speculation as to whether the email service was an April Fool’s stunt.
