First Iron Banner of Destiny: Rise of Iron Begins Next Week

After a long break, Iron Banner returns to Destiny next Tuesday bringing new weapons and armor for players to earn as well as changes to the way the PvP event works.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is practically themed around Iron Banner. Its story focuses on the Iron Lords, its main quest giver is Lord Saladin, and the Rise of Iron record book rewards armor that will adorn players and equip them to become a new Iron Lord themselves. So, it’s no surprise that Iron Banner is returning for the first time since the launch of Destiny‘s new expansion, with some changes in store.

First off, Iron Banner officially commences on Tuesday, October 4th at 10 a.m. Pacific. For the first time, it will feature Rise of Iron’s new Crucible mode, Supremacy. For those who haven’t played it, it is basically Call of Duty‘s Kill Confirmed mode.

Bungie has also put some changes into how fans rank up in Iron Banner, with the hopes of making it more rewarding. Here is the full list of changes:

  • The Tempered mechanic is gone
  • There are now 4 Weekly Bounties
  • Bounty rewards include:
    • An Iron Banner item not featured on the Vendor
    • A chance at an Iron Banner Artifact or Vanity Item
    • 25 Legendary Marks
    • 750 Iron Banner Reputation
  • Victory in a match grants 250 Reputation
  • Iron Medallions grant 150 Reputation each, upon Victor

If Bungie’s design goes to plan, all these changes should allow players to hit rank 5 sooner, with a focus on completing the weekly bounties and continuing to play throughout the week for more post-match rewards.

As far as weapons go, brand new Iron Banner weapons will be up for grabs, adorned with that Viking, Knights of the Round Table theme. The Unbent Tree auto rifle is in the same family as the Doctrine of Passing—insanely high rate of fire and very low impact. The Proud Spire shotgun will also be in the loot pool, which is a pretty middle-of-the-pack shotgun, especially when compared to all the insanely good Matador 64s running around the Crucible. But with the right perk rolls, it could prove itself.

Earlier this week, open-world racing game Forza Horizon 3 was the latest first-partyXbox Play Anywhere title to be released on both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. The game received widespread critical acclaim and was especially praised for its fun gameplay, beautiful rendition of the Australian environments and extensive collection of cars.

If you only bought the $59.99 Standard edition of the game though you won’t be able to enjoy all the game’s content. Today, the Xbox team has published a new video detailing the Forza Horizon 3 Motorsport All-Stars Car Pack, a $9.99 add-on that is included in both the $79.99 Deluxe and $99.99 Ultimate Editions. The official description notes:

The Forza Horizon 3 Motorsport All-Stars Car Pack features 10 amazing race cars – the first time purpose-built race cars have appeared in the Forza Horizon series. Unity introduces its Vulkan renderer for Android

The Vulkan API is promising exciting new things for mobile gaming and 3D application development, and today the company behind the popular Unity engine has announced that its Vulkan Renderer Preview is now live for developers to test out.

The benefits brought about with the introduction of Vulkan are a major speed boost, improved multithreading, and new graphical features. Vulkan boasts notable speed improvements over OpenGL ES 3.x, as the new API has been designed to take advantage of multiple CPU coress along with other optimizations. Unity says that it has seen benchmark performance improvements up to 35 percent with its new renderer, compared with the old OpenGL ES 3.1 renderer, even through they’re both running on a single thread. The cross platform Vulkan API was officially supported on smartphones with the release on Android 7.0 Nougat.

Unity Vulkan API renderer menu optionsUnity’s Vulkan Renderer Preview is still in the experimental phase at the moment, but the option is now there for developers to enable, if they so choose. First, you’ll need to grab theexperimental build from the Unity beta page. To enable Vulkan support, open “Player Settings”, then go to the “Other Settings” pane and clear the “Auto Graphics API” checkbox. Here you’ll be presented with a list of graphics APIs to choose from, which should include Vulkan.

If developers want to test out the improved multi-core performance on offer with Vulkan, they can also hit the Graphics Jobs checkbox for a notable performance boost. Although Unity notes that developers should never have both “Multithreaded Rendering” and “Graphics Jobs (Experimental)” settings enabled at the same time.

 

The team is currently testing the renderer out on the Exynos Samsung Galaxy S7 model, the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, NVIDIA Shield Tablet, and Shield TV. For PC hardware, Unity recommends that developers grab the latest AMD and NVIDIA drivers as well. As is always the case with early builds, there are already a few documented bugs, including crashes, so be sure to back up your projects before diving in.

LinkedIn announces a new online platform

Hot on the heels of the acquisition of LinkedIn by Microsoft this year and the redesign of the company’s iOS and Android apps last year, LinkedIn will be debuting a new desktop experience. In a recent press event, the company also unveiled LinkedIn Learning, a platform designed to help its users discover and develop various skills by way of a data-driven and personalized learning experience.

In a recent blog post, LinkedIn’s VP of Product, Ryan Roslansky, established that LinkedIn’s redesigned desktop interface will take inspiration from its flagship mobile app that came out with a new design last December. The app’s redesign was met with a generally positive response, so it makes sense for the company to try and duplicate what it did right with its mobile app for its desktop, too.

The redesigned desktop experience will rely on minimalistic touches to bring users a cleaner, more intuitive, and simpler approach for users to efficiently access their jobs, insights and info that they require. As a result, the user experience should see a noticeable boon as well: Thanks to the redesign, professionals can go into their daily meetings with better preparation or, alternately, easily learn more about a new business skill that they’re interested in mastering.

Roslansky is calling this desktop redesign “the largest redesign since LinkedIn’s inception,” so it will be interesting to see just how far the company will go to give users a better UX while still staying faithful to the LinkedIn brand.

In tandem with this, the company’s messaging feature gets an upgrade as well as it gets more intelligent and gets more consistent with the experience offered on the company’s redesigned mobile apps. How does this look on desktop? The revamped Messaging approach bears a remarkable resemblance to Facebook’s chat feature. LinkedIn also revealed the integration of a bot platform that could conceivably be utilized for various purposes, such as scheduling meetings.

As for the new online platform, LinkedIn Learning will bring together content from Lynda.com, which LinkedIn owns, and the company’s own professional network and rich data. LinkedIn is uniquely positioned to provide its users with this service designed to appeal to their thirst for continuing education and knowledge.

LinkedIn says that it can leverage its own knowledge of how jobs and skills evolve over a period of time to identify various skills that its users require and then offer expert-led courses that allow them to acquire said skills.

LinkedIn Learning is envisioned as a freemium service, yet all of the company’s users will have the chance to try the new service free for one month. LinkedIn will also continue with its goal to constantly keep enhancing the content on Lynda.com as part of its broader ambition to create opportunities in the global workforce. In the end, the launch of LinkedIn Learning is consistent with Microsoft’s (LinkedIn’s new owner) mission to empower professionals, businesses and organizations to achieve and earn more.

With the company’s desktop redesign and debut of its new learning platform, it’ll be interesting to see how well-received LinkedIn’s new look and features will be.

Microsoft Ignite has brought a number of important and fascinating updates, primarily around the company’s enterprise-oriented cloud services solutions but with a smattering of other topics thrown in. For example, we have our best glimpse yet atwhat’s coming in Windows 10 Mobile while also gaining more evidence that Microsoft has absolutely no plans to fuss with the consumer market for at least the foreseeable future.

One very specific product that received some attention at Ignite is the Surface Hub, the physically largest member of the Surface family of hardware products and the one that’s the most focused on larger businesses. The Surface Hub is more than just an intelligent whiteboard. As we described it in another story:

The Surface Hub is Microsoft’s solution aimed at enabling advanced collaboration solutions, by reimagining the company’s own Pixel Sense technology. Third party speakers may help Google Home take on Amazon Echo

As we gear up to Google’s launch event in San Francisco next week, eyes are not only on the company’s new line-up of Pixel phones, but also on the extended range of smart home accessories expected to be on display. Google Home, a WiFi-connected smart speaker, could turn out to be one of the more important announcements made at the event, as Google prepared to ramp up its efforts in the smart home space and prepares to take on the increasingly popular Amazon Echo.

HiFi audio sales have been rejuvenated by the introduction of wireless Bluetooth and WiFi systems, and the early success of Amazon’s Echo suggests that there’s a growing consumer appetite for tying these systems in with virtual assistant and smart home products. Amazon has reportedly already sold 3 million Echo speaker systems this year, and is aiming to ship 10 million units in 2017. Google clearly does not want to be left behind, and already has an extensive ecosystem of virtual assistant based technologies, including search and app integration, that Google Home will be able to make use of.

According to a report by Variety, Google has been in talks with manufacturers to begin building other devices that will work just like Google Home. Apparently, details were discussed at a closed-door talk with some 50 participant from the home audio market. This suggests that we may end up seeing smart speakers from a variety of manufacturers, all powered by the Google Home could-based assistant.

 

Iportantly, another source alleges that Google may not allow these companies to combine their hardware with other virtual assistance, not that this demand is particularly uprising. Although manufacturers may be reluctant to put all their eggs into Google’s technology. However, some of the companies involved are said to have already worked with Google to produce speakers powered by Google Cast, a list which includes major brands such as Sony, Philips, LG, JBL, and Bang & Olufsen. However, Google has declined to comment on whether it will be working with any third-party manufacturers on this.

Google Home was originally announced back at I/O 2016, so we already know quite a bit about it. The little hub integrates a built-in Bluetooth speaker and microphone, which is paired up with Google Assistant to answer questions and respond to commands. The system is also integrated with Cast, so consumers can launch audio from compatible devices and apps, including Spotify, Tunein, Pandora, and more. Cast capabilities also mean that customers will be table to launch YouTube videos and other steaming services on their TV just by issuing a command to Google Home.

Essentially, Google Home is the company’s big play to bring its mobile assistant services to the home. Google’s portfolio of smart products may also assist the company in catching up with and leapfrogging Amazon Echo. Nest technologies have been incorporated to work on the project, opening up the possibility that other products around the home could be controlled from your speaker system.

According to an insider at the meeting, companies may be ready to unveil speakers with built-in Google Assistant integration as early as next summer. 2017 could be the year that smart homes really hit the mainstream.

Valve introduces new skins that will help its players customize their Steam Link and Steam controllers with various Valve properties’ logos and color schemes.

Valve has always been a bit of an oddity in the gaming world, going about its business with its customary flair and lack of concern over critics like it was the PC platform’s version of Nintendo. However, that willingness to embrace innovative, if sometimes bizarre, business models resulted in the birth of Steam, a program synonymous with PC gaming and the source of many a poor gamer‘s suddenly empty wallet.

It’s that popularity that has allowed Valve to launch its own pseudo-console in the Steam Linkdevice, an accessory that lets PC gamers play their Steam games on any television in their house, effectively turning their PC into a graphically-superior Xbox One or PS4. Valve has also released theSteam controller to more accurately simulate a console gaming environment, and now gamers who have either or both devices will also be able to show their true gaming colors. Valve introduced new skins today that will help players customize their Steam Link or Steam controllers, available in the Steam Store.

The skins, which are nearly all CS:GO themed, are available now and range from four different controller skins to three different Steam Link skins. Although a greater variety will likely be released if the initial skins sell well, there is at least a Portal skin for those Valve fans who aren’t part of the burgeoning CS:GO community.

Alongside the skins, Valve has also released a number of different Steam controller accessories. Gamers can pick up a wireless receiver, a custom battery door that also contains a storage spot for the wireless receiver, or a carrying case that fits the Steam controller, its wireless receiver, a wireless extender, and a few batteries. Given that many Valve games are multiplayer in nature and that LAN parties, although certainly not as prevalent, still happen now, the carrying case in particular could be a welcome addition to many traveling gamers’ arsenals.

 

Everything is available for 30% off to celebrate the new release, so interested gamers should make their decisions quickly to make sure they save some money. With a brand new Steam Store UI on the horizon and a Winter Sale looming, PC gamers will likely need some extra cash.

Serious in intent, legible, playful in style. When designing a font, it can be tough to nail an aesthetic that embodies all three of those things. Well, Gatis Vilaks and Evita Vilaka did it when they created Weem, a free handwriting font for all of your headline and block-of-text needs.

It has that sketchy style you look for in any handwriting font, but is clearly meant to be used in projects with a serious tone. The designers say as much. They also state that it’s intended to be used for titles, headings, and blocks of text.

Despite being free, it’s no “light” version. It comes with all of the characters and punctuation you might expect, in upper and lower case. It also has all of the accent marks, umlauts, and extra lines or squiggles you might need when writing in languages that aren’t English.

During a trip to Sydney, Australia for the launch of Forza Horizon 3 on Xbox One and the Xbox FanFest, Phil Spencer sat down with NZ Gamer to talk about the announcement and launch of the new Xbox One S console and the upcoming Project Scoprio. While a lot of what was discussed had been stated previously in other recent interviews, of particular interest was the part of the conversation concerning the implementation of 4K streaming capability on the Xbox One S and upcoming Project Scorpio consoles and the reality that, right now, not many regions have internet speed high enough to take advantage of it.

“It was one of the reasons we made the physical media decision that we did,” he says in response to a statement about slow internet speeds in countries like Australia and New Zealand. “I know that if you look at usage on the box, you would say ‘Hey, everybody is watching YouTube, everybody is watching Netflix. Why would you do anything physical?’ But I do think markets where bandwidth capabilities and caps, and cost is prohibitive. So we wanted to make the decision that there would be physical media. I think for us games and the native rendering of 4K games is going to be important for Scorpio, which obviously alleviates any kind of need to stream. But I think we’ve been conscious that not everybody lives in a bandwidth happy, uncapped world.”

While incredibly likely that Project Scorpio, like the Xbox One S, will have a 4K physical disk drive, Phil Spencer is quick to state that that hasn’t been confirmed yet. “We’ve seen great adoption of it with the S. People seem to like it, but those kinds of decisions aren’t the decisions that we announced at E3,” he clarifies. “That’s not a push-back, I’m just saying those are the kind of decisions that can kind of bind later, what the drive is. But it has been really great to see how people have responded to the S, and it seems like we would want to continue to ride that option.”

Another detail many gamers and developers have been keen to learn is the eventual price of the new Xbox console, something that could equally make or break the device in regards to overall sales and adoption. As expected, he doesn’t reveal any specific details but does provide some insight into where abouts the price will sit in regards to the Xbox One S and previous video game consoles.

“So you can see the price of the S today. When we designed both of these, which we kind of designed it in parallel. We thought about the price performance of what we wanted to hit with the Scorpio, relative to what we were going to be able to do with the S. So that we would have a good price continuum, so people wouldn’t look at these two things as so disconnected because of the price delta,” Spencer explains. “So I think you will feel like it’s a premium product, a premium console. And not something, anything more than that. So I wouldn’t get people worried that this thing is going to be unlike any console price you’ve ever seen. We didn’t design it that way. That said, the opening price point for the Xbox One S, and the different hard drive sizes that is a critical part of this whole product. When I think about it as a product line, you should expect the pricing to kind of be in line with that.”

Project Scorpio is expected to release publically sometime during the fourth quarter of 2017 and specific details concerning pricing and its final name (Project Scorpio is just a temporary codename) should drop sometime next year.
